The cute lesser panda, also called the red panda or the red cat-bear, has a round face and rich reddish-brown fur. The lesser panda is seen in the Himalayas, Sichuan and Yunnan provinces in China, northern mountainous areas of Myanmar, Nepal, and India. The population of the species is estimated to have declined 40% in China in the late 20th century. The most serious threat to the panda is loss of habitats due to human population growth and large scale logging. Rapid economic growth in Bhutan is also a cause of the rapid decrease in habitats. As human activity increases, so do attacks on pandas by dogs. Infectious diseases transmitted to pandas through infected dog waste are fatal to them. Poaching of the panda for its meat is prevalent in China, Myanmar, and Nepal. Illegal trading of the panda as pets has increased following the proliferation of cute images of the panda by the media.
