The northern white rhino is a species of white rhino and is on the verge of extinction. Sudan, the last surviving male of the species, died on March 19, 2018 at Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Laikipia National Park, Kenya at the age of 45. The Kenyan conservancy decided to euthanize Sudan after his condition became very serious. Now, only two females of this subspecies – Najin and Fatu – are left alive in the world. Sudan’s sperm were frozen to preserve the species through artificial insemination, but it is unclear whether this will succeed. The last surviving northern white rhinos are protected from poachers 24 hours a day by armed caretakers. Poaching is the major reason for the accelerating extinction of rhinos. Rhino horns sell for 80 million won per kilogram, and the poaching shows no sign of ending until rhinos completely die out.
