The Asiatic cheetah once occurred in Central Asia, the Near East, and India. Today, it is critically endangered and survives only in Iran. During the 1970s, the Asiatic cheetah population was estimated to number about 200 individuals. The population is estimated at only 60 to 100 individuals today. Destruction of habitats and declining populations of prey caused by desertification are the two major threats to the survival of the Asiatic cheetah. Also, the number of cheetahs killed in road accidents has increased due to mining operations and road construction. From 2001 to 2014, more than eleven Asiatic cheetahs were killed on roads. There is still poaching in unrestricted areas. Livestock farmers kill the cheetah to protect their livestock or to keep the cheetah as a souvenir.
