There are only about 700 mountain gorillas left in world: about 380 individuals live on Virunga Massif straddling the borders of Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and about 300 individuals live in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in southwest Uganda. Poachers account for two-thirds of gorilla deaths. In ancient times, indigenous people and poachers boiled the ears, tong, genitals, and fingers of the male mountain gorilla and drank the liquid in the belief that they would become as strong as the gorilla. Poachers hunted baby gorillas and sold them to zoos overseas. Gorillas have strong family ties, and adult gorillas will fight to the death to protect their young, with the result that the poachers of the baby gorillas would have to kill several adult gorillas to capture them. The skulls and hands of gorillas were popular among tourists. Thanks to ongoing efforts to protect the mountain gorilla, the population has been gradually increasing. Even so, the mountain gorilla remains endangered because rampant poaching persists and habitats are declining.
